Orange Peel Grapple | 4/6 Jaw Hydraulic Grapple for Scrap Metal &
Waste Handling
When you are moving scrap, waste and loose bulk material all day, your productivity comes down to one number: how much you can grab in a single pass. That is exactly why the orange peel grapple has become standard equipment in scrap yards, recycling plants and demolition sites around the world.
What Is an Orange Peel Grapple?
An orange peel grapple — also called an orange peel grab — is a hydraulic attachment fitted with several curved tines that open and close much like the segments of a peeled orange. Most models use four or six tines, and the multi-tine layout lets the grapple penetrate deep into a pile instead of pushing material around on the surface.
Mounted on an excavator or material handler, the tines are driven by hydraulic cylinders. Many models also offer 360-degree hydraulic rotation, which lets the operator position the grapple precisely over a truck bed, container or sorting area without repositioning the machine.
Where Orange Peel Grapples Work Best
Because the tines are designed for loose and irregular material, the orange peel grapple performs well wherever material needs to be picked, sorted and loaded:
- Scrap yards and metal recycling — scrap metal, mixed steel, end-of-life vehicle bodies (auto hulks)
- Demolition and construction waste — mixed demolition debris, wood, concrete fragments
- Bulk material handling — stones, wood chips, sawdust, compost and similar loose material
- Transfer stations and ports — loading and unloading containers and trucks quickly
Compared with a bucket, an orange peel grapple is far better at grabbing uneven shapes. Compared with a magnet, it can handle non-ferrous material and mixed waste, which makes it a flexible addition to any material handling fleet.
What to Look For in an Orange Peel Grapple
1. Wear-resistant materials where they matter.
A grapple takes constant abrasion. The strongest builds use a structural steel body for the load-bearing structure, wear-resistant steel in the high-contact areas, and alloy steel for pins and shafts so the joints stay tight over years of use.
2. Hydraulic rotation.
Rotation is not a luxury — it is what turns a grapple into a precision tool. It reduces machine repositioning and cuts cycle time on every load.
3. Correct sizing for your machine.
An undersized grapple wastes capacity and wears out faster; an oversized one strains the carrier. Capacity should be matched to your excavator’s tonnage, hydraulic flow and the density of the material you handle.
4. Build quality and testing.
Ask about welding standards, hydraulic component quality, and whether the unit is tested before shipment. This is where low-cost grapples and professional-grade grapples separate quickly.
Custom-Built to Fit Your Machine
No two yards are the same. Machine brands differ, hydraulic specifications differ, and the material being handled ranges from light wood chips to heavy steel scrap. Off-the-shelf attachments often mean compromises in capacity, mounting or rotation.
At HOMIE, we build hydraulic attachments to order. Send us your excavator brand, model and working conditions, and we prepare a design drawing for your confirmation before production starts. Custom sizing, mounting brackets, paint colour and branding can all be tailored. OEM and ODM orders are welcome, and our engineering team supports the project from drawing through to final testing.
